28th - Live Hedgehog in back garden Sycamore Avenue.

29th - 50+ Redwing in field south of the railway line viewed from Watson's Bridge, pair of Song Thrushes and 1 Mistle Thrush in a field near the Nadee Restaurant, 20+ Pied Wagtails, 1 Grey Wagtail, 6 Reed Buntings and 1 Sparrowhawk seen near the sewage works.

February

1st - Fox seen strolling up the footpath at the back of Aults Close and 3.40 in the afternoon!!!

2nd - Reed Bunting on bird feeder Aults Close.

2nd - Pair of thrushes seen in garden Sycamore Avenue.

2nd - 6 Wrens, 1 Grey Wagtail and 1 Snipe all seen feeding in the outflow at the sewage works. Also 5 Mistle Thrushes seen amongst Fieldfares seen in the field opposite Cote Close Bird Sanctuary.

3rd - Flock of Redwing and Fieldfares in field opp Ballast Hole Pond.

3rd - Reed Bunting on bird feeder Aults Close, flock of Redwing in tree Aults Close.

3rd - 2 Buzzards soaring over Crow Park Way,  7 Song Thrushes feeding with Redwings in a field North of the canal between the Nadee Restaurant and the sewage works. Male Reed Bunting seen at the sewage works, a pair of Bullfinches seen on the pond opposite the Nadee and a lone male seen on the footpath at the back of King George V playing field.

4th - Flock of about 12 Redwing in tree Aults Close and feeding on holly berries in front garden.

 4th - 3 Fieldfares seen in back garden Burton Road.

 5th - Seen feeding in the filter beds and and in the small reed bed at the sewage works: Redwings, Pied Wagtails, Blackbirds, Wrens, Robins, Dunnocks, 3 Grey Wagtails and the Snipe again.

5th - 2 Mistle Thrushes feeding in back garden Hillside.

6th - Grey Heron, Grey Wagtail, Goldcrest and a male Reed Bunting all seen at the sewage works.

20th - 2 Foxes seen in Bakeacre Lane.

20th - 3 Siskin and 1 Lesser Redpoll feeding on alders near the Ballast Hole Pond. 2 Stock Doves, 11 Lapwing and 2 Skylarks in stubble field West of Watson's Bridge. 2 pairs of Bullfinches by the playing field and a male Bullfinch near the sewage works.

24th - 2 Peregrines on the cooling towers and 14 Tufted Ducks on the pool opposite Mercia Marina.

24th - 2 Oystercatchers amongst Canada Geese on the grass area in front of the chandlers at Mercia Marina.

24th - Green Woodpecker seen in ash tree Stanhope Wood.

24th - Bumble bee active in conservatory Sycamore Avenue.

25th - 2 Green Woodpeckers seen in ash tree Stanhope Wood, hopefully a breeding pair.

25th - Snowdrops out on Cote Close Bank, Stanhope Hole Bank and along the canal towpath.

1st - Male Brimstone butterfly seen flying on Common Piece Lane. 10 Lapwing and a Stock Dove seen in the stubble field SW of Watson's Bridge. Male Great Spotted Woodpecker seen along the canal between the Ballast Hole Pond and the treatment works. 2 Skylarks and a Yellowhammer seen near Hicklin's Bridge.A Grey Wagtail and at least 8 Reed Buntings seen near the treatment works.

1st - Frogs mating in garden pond Aults Close.

1st - Brimstone butterfly seen in garden Sycamore Avenue.

2nd - Little Grebe and 13 Tufted duck seen on pond opposite Mercia Marina, a Sparrowhawk seen over the top of Heath Lane, a Kestrel seen over Willington Power Station and 2 Oystercatchers seen at Mercia Marina.

2nd - Red Admiral butterfly seen in garden Sycamore Avenue.

6th - Green Woodpecker seen at Willington Power Station, 6 Meadow Pipits and a pair of Reed Buntings near the pond opposite Mercia Marina, Goldcrest seen feeding in back garden at the Wheel Inn on Main Street.

7th- 2 Song Thrushes seen in a tree in Aults Close, hopefully a pair.

11th - Grey Wagtail, Goldcrest and 6 Reed Buntings seen at the treatment works. 2 Cormorants seen flying over the canal. 2 Peregrines seen flying over Willington Power Station. 5 Buzzards seen flying over the village. A Brimstone butterfly was seen down Common Piece Lane and 3 Small Tortoiseshells seen in a garden in Hillside.

12th - 6 Lapwing seen in ploughed field near HIcklin Bridge, 2 Treecreepers seen near the Ballast Hole Pond

12th - Cowslips in flower on Cardales Bank.

13th - Reed Bunting in back garden Aults Close.

13th - Frogspawn in garden pond Aults Close.

14th - Frogspawn in the pond at Stanhope Hole Conservation Area and also a pair of magpies nesting in a tree.

15th - Pair of Bullfinches and flock of Long Tailed Tits feeding in back garden Sycamore Avenue.

16th - 3 Lapwings seen on canal towpath.

17th - Sparrowhawk swooped through garden Sycamore Avenue. 2 Tufted Ducks seen on Marina pond. Cowslips seen on Cardales and Cote Close bank and Butterburr along the towpath. Blackthorn in Stanhope Hole and Cote Close.

17th - Group members and members of Derbyshire Bat Conservation Group installed 7 new bat boxes and checked our existing ones. 2 Soprano Pipistrelles were found roosting in on of the  boxes and evidence of occupancy by Pipistrelles and Brown Long Eared bats was found in several others. Grateful thanks to Derbyshire County Council for providing funding for the new bat boxes.

20th - Red Admiral butterfly seen in a garden on Hillside.

21st - Frogs and frogspawn in garden pond Sycamore Avenue

22nd - female Sparrowhawk seen perched at the treatment works, pair of Lapwing seen in a field SW of Watson's bridge, 4 Chiffchaff seen in various locations along the canal walk, a pair of Linnet and a pair of Yellowhammer seen in a meadow east of Heath Lane. A female Kestrel seen hunting at several locations.

25th - Pair of Stock Doves seen in the old hollow tree at the back of the horse paddocks on Crow Park Way. Blackcap seen in the hawthorn thicket east of Watson's Bridge.

25th - Coal Tit on feeder in garden Sycamore Avenue. Dog Violets out near the cemetery on Common Piece Lane.

28th - Comma, Brimstone, Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock butterflies seen Common Piece Lane. 5 Chiffchaffs heard singing Common Piece lane.

29th - Badger seen foraging in the ditch between the railway and canal near Buckford Bridge in broad daylight.. Blackcap heard singing Crow Park Way.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

April

3rd - 2 Lapwing seen near Hicklin's Bridge, one Treecreeper seen near the Ballast Hole Pond and one on the old railway fishing pond. Male Yellowhammer singing in field off Heath Lane. 5 Reed Bunting seen at the treatment works. Female Kestrel seen hunting near the Nadee Restaurant and one Peregrine seen on the cooling towers. One Oystercatcher seen at the Marina and 2 Swallows seen flying north over Findern Lane towards the village. The first swallows this year, summer is coming.

13th - One Swallow seen perched on wires on the lower part of Heath Lane. Male Wheatear seen in field NE of Hicklin's Bridge, poss migrating and grounded by a heavy shower. At least 4 (2 pairs) of Blackcaps and one Willow Warbler  seen feeding on a bush near Severn Trent treatment works.

17th - Female Song Thrush seen feeding one young in tree in Aults Close.

22nd - Green Woodpecker seen sitting on the fence at the bottom of Cardales Wildflower Meadow. Possibly nesting in the big ash tree.

28th - Green Woodpecker seen in Cardales Meadow, flock of c20 Swallows seen feeding around cattle West of Treatment works, 4 Wheatear seen in field NE of Hicklin's Bridge, Willow Warbler heard singing near the Treatment works, 1 Treecreeper seen near Watson's Bridge, Pair of Yellowhammers seen in field with Wheatears and a male Reed Bunting seen at the Treatment works.

30th - 3 House Martins seen flying over the top end of Porter's Lane, Lesser Whitethroat seen singing in the hedge opposite Cote Close Bird Sanctuary and a male Common Whitethroat seen in brambles in Cote Close.

 

 

 

May

May

1st - Swift seen Findern Lane, Willington side of the level crossing.

2nd - Little Grebe, Canada Geese and goslings, 12 Tufted Ducks, a Peregrine, a Pair of Moorhen with 4 newly fledged young, 3 pairs of Coot all with young, a Green Woodpecker, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, a Treecreeper, 2 pairs of Linnets, a pair of Bullfinches, 4 Yellowhammers, a male Reed Bunting and a Jay all seen on a morning's walk along the towpath and by Mercia Marina.

2nd - Stoat seen hunting near a farm track on the lower section of Heath Lane.

12th - Fantastic day for a Dawn Chorus Walk, a bit nippy but warm in the sun. 28 species heard or seen including:- Common Whitethroat, Wren, Robin, Blackbird, Chiffchaff, Chaffinch, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Song Thrush, Blackcap, Reed Bunting, Lapwing, Green Woodpecker and Greenfinch.

18th - Garden Warbler heard singing in a hedge alongside the allotments on Common Piece Lane and a pair of Bullfinches seen near King George V Playing Field.

22nd - Grey Heron seen fishing in the canal near Hicklin's Bridge, Oystercatcher seen feeding in a field west of the treatment works, Lesser Whitethroat seen near Hicklin's Bridge and another at the bottom of Common Piece Lane, Reed Warbler singing in reed bed at the treatment works, Jay seen flying over the railway line near Watson's Bridge, pair of Bullfinches seen from Watson's Bridge and a male Reed Bunting seen in the reeds at Stanhope Wood. A Holly Blue butterfly was seen in a garden on Hillside, the first sighting this year.

27th - Green Woodpecker seen near Stanhope Hole Conservation Area.

30th - Broad-bodied Chaser dragonfly seen on leaf on garden pond Aults Close.

30th and 31st - Great Spotted Woodpecker seen on the fence at the rear of the bungalows in Brook Close and also seen to take food from a bird feeder in the garden.

 

 

 

 

 

 

June

4th-2 grey partridges were seen in the long grass in Cote Close Bird Sanctuary.

 8th- A green woodpecker was spotted flying over Stanhope Wood.

8th- An exciting sighting! 2 coots with 2 young  swimming in the canal near Hickin's Bridge.

 8th- Cardales Wildflower Meadow is now at its best!  Why not take a look to see herb robert, cow parsley, hay rattle, ox eye daisy and creeping buttercup all in full flower.

9th- A bee orchid was spotted early this morning.

10th- Lots of moisture loving plants to look for in the wetland site in Stanhope Wood. Yellow flag, ragged robin, purple loosestrife and meadowsweet are all in full flower.

13th- 8 sand martins were spotted at Mercia Marina wildlife pond. We also saw a mallard with 12 chicks swimming there.

14th- 6 more bee orchids seen in full flower. Thanks to Derbyshire County Council and South Derbyshire District Council and our own Parish Clerk Clare Orme  for their support in helping to conserve them.

14th- Common spotted  and southern marsh orchids are in flower. One beautiful speciman has 9 flower spikes!

19th- Yellow hammers and skylarks were heard singing in Stanhope Wood early this morning.

19th- A buzzard flew over Stanhope Wood with a baby rabbit in its claws.

24th- 6 more bee orchids, this time on another site.

24th-Meadow cranesbill and field scabious are flowering on the banks around the wetland area in Stanhope Wood.

25th- A reed bunting has been happily sitting in the reeds in Stanhope Wood, and a skylark has been heard singing over Cardales Meadow.

27th-A green woodpecker and 2 common white throats were heard in Stanhope Wood this morning.

27th- A grey heron was seen flying over the canal towards Willington.

27th-2 cinnabar moths were seen day flying as were 2 meadow brown butterflies.

28th- Lots of Meadow Brown butterflies on the wing; also two Small Skippers, a male Brimstone and the first Banded Demoiselle damselfly of the year seen in Stanhope Hole.

29th- Shaggy incaps have appeared in Cote Close Bird Sanctuary and in Commonpiece Lane.

30th-Hedgehog spotted seen wandering along Hazel Close late at night.

 

July

July

2nd- A wren standing looking around in a garden in Sycamore Ave.

2nd- A dunnock, a pair of bullfinches, a female chaffinch, a blackbird, plenty of gold finches and bluetits all feeding in a garden in Sycamore Ave.

4th -A Little Grebe, 2 pairs of Tufted Ducks with several young and a Reed Warbler seen on the wildlife pond at Mercia Marina whilst a few Swallows and House Martins were hawking over the pond. Kestrel seen hunting over the A50. An Oystercatcher and a Common Tern seen on the Marina itself. A pair of Linnet seen along Willington Road and a pair of Bullfinch on Heath Lane. Sparrowhawk seen flying through a garden on Hillside in the evening.

7th - Seen and heard on a walk around the canal circuit this morning;- Skylark, 2 Blackcaps, 8 Long-tailed Tits, a pair of Bullfinches and 3 Yellowhammers. Also a 2 Ringlet Butterflies seen by the canal, the first sighting this year.

8th - 8pm this evening a male sparrowhawk was seen eating prey on the ground near the village pump on Main Street. Not known what the prey was.

11th - 1150 am Polecat/Polecat Ferret seen crossing Doles Lane and going into field on Turnpike Way.

20th - All seen at Mercia Marina and adjacent pond:- a pair of Mute Swans with 7 cygnets, 3 female Tufted Ducks with 15 ducklings between them, 2 Oystercatchers, 1 Common Tern and a male Reed Bunting was seen along Willington Road.

23rd - Six species of butterfly seen on the canal circuit walk: Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Small White, Small Skipper, Comma and Gatekeeper.

23rd - Kestrel seen hunting near the Nadee, Pheasant seen in the field opp Clovermead, Great Spotted Woodpecker heard near the treatment works, Green Woodpecker heard near Watson's Bridge, Reed Warbler seen gathering food in the reed bed by Stanhope Wood, and a Common Whitethroat heard singing in Cote Close Bird Sanctuary.

27th - Several clumps of Large Thyme seen on Cardales Bank for the first time. Gatekeeper butterfly seen in Cote Close Bird Sanctuary and a Brown Hawker Dragonfly seen in Stanhope Wood.

29th - a pair of Little Grebe with 3 young seen on the wildlife pond opposite Mercia Marina. Severl Essex Skipper butterflies seen in the long grass adjacent to the pond.

30th - on the Trent and Mersey canal circuit 2 Kestrels were seen hunting one near the treatment works and one near the A50. A Small Copper butterfly seen in Cote's Close, the first sighting from the second brood.

August

2nd - seen on the canal circuit: 3 Buzzard, one Pied Wagtail seen from Watson's bridge, one Lesser Whitethroat seen along Crow Park way, one juvenile Blackcap seen near Hicklin's Bridge, a family of 5 Long Tailed Tits seen near Hicklin's Bridge, a male Bullfinch seen in flight near Watson's Bridge and 2 Yellowhammers heard singing one in Heath Lane and one near Hicklin's Bridge. At least 12 Banded Demoiselle see along the canal and a Small Copper seen in Cote Close.

5th - Sparrowhawk flying over a garden on Hillside.

6th - Hobby seen flying over a garden on Hillside.

7th - Seen on the wildlife pond opposite Mercia Marina an Emperor dragonfly egg laying and at least 10 male Black-tailed Skimmers. Seen near the Nadee a pair of  Mute Swans with 7 cygnets.

8th - Seen in a garden on Hillside a Peacock butterfly, first sighting of a new brood.

9th - Seen on a walk to the Marina: a pair of Great Crested Grebe with young, a Peregrine on the cooling towers, 2 Sand Martins feeding with Swallows over the marina pond, at least 10 mostly young Pied Wagtails at the marina. A Chiffchaff seen alongside the canal and a male Bullfinch with one young seen near the pond. 2 Speckled Wood butterflies and 2 female Common Darters seen along Baxter's Way.

10th - 2 Sparrowhawks seen from Watson's Bridge one with prey in it's talons. A Buzzard seen perched in a dead tree near Hicklin's Bridge, a Kestrel perched on wires near the A50. A Green Woodpecker flew over the canal between the Nadee and the treatment works. Great Spotted Woodpecker heard in an oak tree at the top of Porters Lane. 2 juvenile Song Thrushes in a field adjacent to Crow Park Way. 2 juvenile Common Whitethroats and a female Blackcap seen near the railway bridge over the canal. Yellowhammer heard singing near King George playing field and one near Hicklin's Bridge. Lots of Banded Demoiselles flying around both males and females.

10th - Lunchtime, a Hobby was watched catching insects over a garden in Hillside.

12th - 2 Heron seen on the roof of a house in Cloverslade.

15th - Green Woodpecker seen in an oak tree in Sycamore Avenue.

15th - Green Woodpecker seen in Stanhope Wood.

22nd - Kingfisher seen flying along the Trent and Mersey Canal.

22nd - Barn Owl seen flying on Castle Hill.

29th - Barn Owl seen flying at the top of Common Piece Lane.

30th - A Toad seen sitting on the track at the back of Stanhope Wood.

 

 

 

 

 

September

September

3rd - Seen during a walk to the marina this morning 2 Greylag Geese (a new species for the year) with the Canada Geese. A Grey Heron and a Kestrel were seen flying over the A50 and a Reed Warbler and several juvenile Goldfinches were seen at the wildlife pool.

4th - A Buzzard seen flying over the treatment works. 1 female Blackcap seen feeding on Elderberries opposite the treatment works and another seen in the corner of Cote Close. At least 8 Long Tailed Tits seen in Cote Close.

8th - 5pm seen on the wall of a house in Burton Road a Cliften Nonpareil moth. Checks with the county recorder revealed that the last time this species was recorded in this area was in 1966.

9th - A Goldcrest seen in the pine at the bottom of Common Piece Lane. A Jay seen flying along the hedge from Watson's Bridge.

9th - A Hedgehog seen feeding on a lawn in Sycamore Close. Also seen in the same location on 11th and 13th September.

27th - 2 Mistlethrushes seen flying over the top of Heath Lane, Great Spotted Woodpecker seen in the ash tree near the top of Heath Lane, about 7 Long Tailed Tits seen along Crow Park Way and 2 Ravens seen flying over the canal near the Nadee Restaurant. Comma Butterfly seen Common Piece Lane and a Brimstone butterfly seen in a garden next to the Post Office. A male Common Darter Dragonfly seen along Baxter's Way and a Common Hawker Dragonfly seen in a garden on Hillside.

October

3rd - 5 Buzzards seen soaring in the air together opposite Clovermead. Female Kestrel seen hunting near Watson's Bridge. 8 Jays seen flying west over Hicklin's Bridge and a female Bullfinch seen near Hicklin's Bridge.

13th - Group members accompanied members of Derbyshire Bat Conservation Group to inspect the 22 bat boxes on our wildlife sites.  Some boxes were empty and some had been inhabited by birds, spiders and snails, however, a total of 10 Soprano Pipistrelles were found in 3 boxes and evidence of bats was found in others.  

19th - Little Grebe seen on the wildlife pond opposite Mercia Marina. Cormorant seen flying over Mercia Marina. Pair of Gadwall seen on Mercia Marina pond (first sighting there this  year). Sparrowhawk seen flying over top part of Heath Lane.

22nd - Male Sparrowhawk caught a Greenfinch on a garden bird feeder and plucked it on the lawn.

23rd - 2 Great Crested Grebe seen at Mercia Marina. Song Thrush seen along Crow Park Way. At least 10 Long Tailed Tits seen along Crow Park Way.

30th - Blackcap on garden bird feeder Sycamore Avenue.

31st - One Fieldfare seen feeding on haws by the canal west of the Nadee. Several small groups of Redwing seen, one by the railway west of the Nadee, another by the canal east of the Nadee and a third near Watson's Bridge. One Green Woodpecker seen feeding on the ground near the treatment works. Pair of Bullfinches seen near Watson's Bridge.

Male Sparrowhawk seen making daily visits and preying on Greenfinches.

 

 

November

2nd - Pair of Gadwall still on the pond opposite Mercia Marina. One Song Thrush seen with about 20 Fieldfares  near the footbridge over the canal.

6th - Kestrel and Goldcrest seen near the treatment works. 2 flocks of Long Tailed Tits seen along the canal. Flock of 20+ Goldfinches seen feeding on Alder west of the Nadee. Male Bullfinch seen near the treatment works.

8th - Great Crested Grebe seen at the Marina. Male Sparrowhawk flew through garden on Hillside and all the other birds completely deserted the feeders.

10th - Heron, Buzzard and Sparrowhawk all seen in Stanhope Wood.

11th - Grey Heron seen near the treatment works. Sparrowhawk seen flying over Findern. 10 Lapwing seen in the stubble field from Watson's Bridge. 200+ Wood Pigeon seen in the stubble field from Watson's Bridge. Great Spotted Woodpecker seen to fly over the canal from Stanhope Wood. One Grey Wagtail seen at the treatment works, (the first sighting since March). 2 Mistle Thrush seen in the field opposite King George V playing field.

11th - Green Woodpecker seen in Cardales Wildflower Meadow.

12th - Kestrel seen in field Rushy Meadow Way off Lower Green.

13th - One Kingfisher seen flying adjacent to the canal between the Nadee and the treatment works. Great Spotted Woodpecker seen near the treatment works and another near Hicklin's Bridge.

15th - Blackcap seen on bird feeder Sycamore Avenue.

18th - 6 Waxwings seen in the top of the mature trees at the back of  Cardales Meadow. 60+ Lapwings seen in the stubble field from Watson's Bridge.

22nd - Male Sparrowhawk seen on cherry tree Sycamore Avenue.

 24th - 4 Waxwings seen in the front garden of a house in Burton Road eating rowan berries.

30th - Jay and Thrush on lawn Aults Close eating bread.

2nd - Great Spotted Woodpecker eating nuts on bird feeder back garden of Aults Close.

6th - Mink (1) seen on the towpath and in the canal between the Ragley Boat Stop and Bridge 17 at Barrow.

9th - Sparrowhawk seen swooping garden Sycamore Avenue.

11th - 60+ Pink Footed Geese seen flying North over Crow Park Way, Grey Wagtail seen at the treatment works and a Great Spotted Woodpecker at the Ballast Hole Pond.

13th - Firedfares and Redwings eating berries on cotoneaster in back garden Aults Close.

21st - Kingfisher seen at Mercia Marina.

21st - Long Tailed Tits seen in garden Sycamore Avenue.

24th - Snipe seen flying under the bridge near the Nadee Restaurant.

24th - Male Merlin watched trying to catch a sparrow in a garden in Willington Road. Was watched for five minutes, before it flew off without a catch.

30th - Tawny Owl seen Common Piece Lane.

30th - Great Spotted Woodpecker seen in a sycamore tree in Sycamore Avenue.
