Minute number 503/12/FPG Evaluations item Findern Historical Walk 26th September 2012. Heather stated she had not attended this event and Frances stated she had attended. Having amended Frances for Heather the minutes were approved as a true record.
4. Minute Number 512/12/FPG – Finance and Fundraising
Joan stated that the reserve account had accrued 50p interest and that this account now stood at
The following payments had been received and paid into the current account:
£500 grant from Findern Parish Council towards two Fun on the Green events.
£376.96 Minor Maintenance Payment
£25 from Derby City Council for September’s Wild Derby Walk.

Liz reported that she still needed at least 2 more letters of support for the application for funding for elm trees to be planted as part of the White Letter Hairstreak Butterfly project. She stated that as this application could not be made and processed before February this would be too late for planting the trees so she will delay sending in the application until the spring. In the meantime group members are asked to obtain letters of support from parishioners.
5. Minute Number 513/12/FPG – Communications and Notifications
i) Liz passed round a letter from the Church thanking group members for their support in the Harvest Festival.
ii) E-mail received from DCC outlying changes to Crow Park Way with the rerouting of the bridleway. This involved replacing our ‘A’ frame with a horse gate. No objections were raised but members asked if our ‘A’ frame could be returned to us for use elsewhere and that adequate signs showing the route of the bridleway were installed as soon as it is opened. It was felt appropriate that these changes were requested through Duncan Lovatt, Rights of Way assistant. Liz agreed to contact him.
iii) In response to a request from the parents of a child killed in a road accident on the A50 to plant a memorial tree Liz had met the parents and discussed the type of tree to be planted. We are awaiting their decision.
iv) Liz stated that next year will mark 20 years that the payback team have been coming to work on in the village. The Parish Council are to be asked if they would like to mark the occasion.
v) Joan stated that all e-mails received on the group’s e-mail address had been forwarded to members for any comments they wished to make during the meeting.
6. Minute Number 514/12/FPG – Evaluations
i) Bat Box check Saturday 13th October 2012
Heather and Liz Lenton attended with Alan and Steven Roe from the Derbyshire Bat Conservation Group. Steven had e-mailed the results which had been forwarded to members. It was encouraging to see that boxes installed in March had been visited by bats and it was suggested that more boxes could be installed. Heather volunteered to liaise with Steven as to how many boxes and where best to locate them.
ii) Fun on The Green Wednesday 31st October 2012
Although grey and windy the rain held off and this was another well attended event. The shop raised £20.60p and the pick a pen £18. The children following the wildlife trail had trouble writing the answers to the clues onto the paper so it was agreed that the group purchase a number of clipboards for future events. The owls brought along by JTS Falcons proved very popular as did the mini zoo so it was agreed to book them for our next Fun on The Green in February 2013. Another suggestion was for the children to make barn owl boxes to be put out onto our wildlife sites and Heather said she would liaise with Alan Withington re the cost etc.
7. Minute Number 515/12/FPG – Event Planning
i) Findern Primary School Christmas Fair Thursday 29th November 2012
Heather stated she had spoken to Tim who told her that as yet no one had decided what form the event would take.
ii) Santa Stroll Thursday 13th December 2012 at 10am
Liz stated that the pre school children would be doing a short walk and getting sponsored by parents, committee members friends and relatives.. Group members would dress as Santa and walk with the children and also raise sponsor money, which would hopefully purchase an item requested by the preschool..
Liz, Nev, Wendy, Joan, Janet and Frances volunteered to don the red suits.
iii) National Forest Walking Festival May 2013
Joan stated she had sent the completed walk form and the risk assessment for the Findern Mercia Marina Circular Walk which would take place on Tuesday 28th May 2013 starting from Findern Green at 10 am. She stated the next steering group meeting was on Friday 22nd February 2013 from 10 am to 12 noon at Moira.
iv) SDDC Environmental Forum Tuesday 6th November 2012 7pm at Repton village hall
Heather and Liz Lenton attending
v) Lowland Derbyshire Forum Saturday 17th November 2012 at Matlock
The e-mail had been forwarded to members who were to liaise direct with Matlock if they wished to attend.
vi) Elves Workshop Sunday 25th November 2012 1.30pm to 3.30pm Parish Rooms
This event is in partnership with Kate Allies and the Environmental Education team from Rosliston. The group were to order 30 trees at 25p each and Kate would bring along the materials for the children to decorate them. In addition group members were to organise one or two other craft events.
Resolved: Nev will order the trees and Janet, Frances, Sheila and Liz would organise other crafts. Joan reminded members that receipts must be obtained for any items/materials etc purchased,
vii) Wild Derby Volunteer Project 2013
It was unclear exactly what commitment members would have to make, in particular whether members would be required to attend on 5 consecutive days, so Heather volunteered to liaise with Steve Cresswell with exactly what would be required of group members should we agree to take part in this project.
viii) Jubilee Wood Planting
Liz states that the Brownies had ordered 500 trees which were being delivered week commencing 5th November, as are the 500 trees that we have been awarded from the Woodland Trust to the group. A further 500 trees from Derbyshire Wildlife Trust’s Value in Trees project will be delivered w/c 5 December so we needed to organise 3 dates for planting. Stuart (Canal and River Trust) was available only on 24th and 26th November and 10th December so these were the dates we would have to go with. Group members volunteered as follows:
24th November, meet at the Nadee at 10 am
Joan (and Dave), Janet, Heather, Seymour, Liz Lenton (and Ken), Jan, Wendy, Liz and Nev
26th November, meet at the Nadee at 10 am
Joan (and Dave), Nev, Wendy, Seymour, Anne, Janet and Liz Lenton (and Ken)
10th December, meet at the Nadee at 10 am
Liz and Nev, Janet, Wendy, Seymour and Sheila (and Bob)
In addition to asking spouses to help out members are also to ask other residents who they think would give a helping hand and Frances will have a go at making a flyer to be printed off and delivered around the village.
8. Minute Number 516/12/FPG – Public Rights of Way Reports
9. Minute Number 517/12/FPG – Wildlife Site Management
Heather asked that we give thought to planting a blackthorn hedge in Cote Close Bird Sanctuary to deter people using the lay-by on the A50 from climbing over the fence and causing damage. It was agreed that November and December were already taken up with planting the Jubilee Wood so Heather will liaise with Martin re how many trees are required with a view to planting them in January.
Liz thanked Heather and Wendy for their work repairing the hedgehog house in the churchyard and Nev for all the mowing he’s done single-handedly throughout the year. It was agreed to get together in January to sort out the garages and the yard at the rear of the parish rooms to make getting to the mower and other tools easier.
It was again noted that as the payback team don’t come out every week we continually get behind on the mowing and strimming. Anne suggested that we contact Clare, the parish clerk, with a view to engaging the services of DARE and volunteered to do so.
10. Minute Number 518/12/FPG – Wildlife Database
Several residents and some group members reported seeing a bird of prey too big to be a sparrow hawk and general consensus of opinion is that it could be a Merlin.
11. Minute Number 519/12/FPG – Next Meeting and appointment of chair
Resolved: The next meeting will be held in the Parish Rooms, Findern on Thursday 3rd January 2013 commencing at 7pm and will be chaired by Heather.
